This final project combines:

  • ROS 2 Communication (Module 1): The backbone for inter-component communication, ensuring seamless data flow between sensors, perception, planning, and control modules.
  • Humanoid Sensors & Perception (Module 2): Utilizing simulated sensor data (cameras, depth, IMU) to enable the humanoid to perceive its environment, identify objects, and understand spatial relationships.
  • Digital Twin & Simulation (Module 3): Leveraging high-fidelity simulation environments like Gazebo or NVIDIA Isaac Sim to create a realistic digital twin of our humanoid, allowing for safe and rapid development and testing.
  • NVIDIA Isaac + VLA Control (Module 4): Integrating advanced Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, potentially powered by large language models (LLMs) and NVIDIA Isaac utilities, to translate natural language instructions into robot actions.

Target Scenario: Imagine a humanoid robot situated in a simulated apartment environment. Our objective is for this humanoid to interpret and execute complex, natural-language commands. For example, the robot should be able to process instructions such as:

"Pick up the red box from the table and place it on the shelf."

This seemingly simple command involves a cascade of intricate robotic capabilities: object recognition, navigation to the table, precise grasping, movement to the shelf, and accurate placement.

3. Environment & Project Setup

How to Set Up and Launch:

  1. Create your ROS 2 Workspace:

4. Defining Natural-Language Tasks for the Humanoid

Translating human intent, expressed in natural language, into precise robot actions is a core challenge of this capstone. We need a systematic way to define and categorize the types of commands our humanoid should understand and execute.

Turning Vague Goals into Concrete Tasks:

A user's high-level goal, such as "Clean the room," is too abstract for a robot. The VLA system needs to break this down into a sequence of actionable, robot-specific commands.

Examples of Concrete Tasks:

  • Navigation: "Walk to the kitchen table." "Go to the red chair." "Move forward five steps."
  • Perception Query: "Look at the object on the counter and describe it." "What color is the box?" "Is there anything on the shelf?"
  • Manipulation: "Pick up the blue mug." "Grasp the screwdriver." "Place the book on the desk."
  • Multi-step Chained Tasks: These combine the above primitives. "Go to the refrigerator, open it, and grab the milk." "Find the remote on the couch, pick it up, and bring it to me."

Simple Task Taxonomy:

To facilitate planning and skill mapping, we can categorize tasks:

  • Navigation Tasks: Involve moving the robot's base to a specified location or relative position.
    • Examples: go_to_waypoint(x, y, theta), move_relative(dx, dy, dz).
  • Perception Queries: Involve using sensors to gather information about the environment or specific objects.
    • Examples: detect_object(object_name), describe_object(object_id), scan_area(are-id).
  • Manipulation Tasks: Involve interacting with objects, typically using an end-effector.
    • Examples: grasp_object(object_id), place_object(object_id, location_id), open_drawer(drawer_id).
  • Multi-step Chained Tasks: Sequences of the above primitives, often requiring internal state tracking and logical flow. These are generated by the VLA brain.

5. VLA Control Loop for the Capstone

The Vision–Language–Action (VLA) loop is the central nervous system of our language-driven humanoid. It enables the robot to perceive its environment, interpret human commands, formulate a plan, and execute physical actions. This loop constantly processes new information and updates its internal state to achieve the desired goals.

The Vision–Language–Action Loop:

  1. Perception: The robot continuously gathers information from its simulated sensors. This includes:

    • Images & Depth: From RGB-D cameras, providing visual appearance and 3D structure of the scene.
    • Semantic Map: A higher-level representation of the environment, identifying objects, their categories, and navigable areas.
    • Proprioception: Joint states, IMU data, and odometry provide self-awareness and body state.
  2. Language Input: The system receives natural language commands, either directly as text or via a speech-to-text module if implemented.

  3. Planning & Skill Selection: This is where the VLA/LLM node comes into play. It takes the language command, combines it with the current perception of the environment, and generates a high-level task plan. This plan is a sequence of calls to a predefined "skills library." The LLM acts as a high-level planner, translating abstract goals into concrete robotic skills.

  4. Action Generation: Once a skill is selected, the VLA node translates it into low-level robot actions. For example, a grasp skill might generate a series of joint trajectories, end-effector poses, and force commands that are then sent to the robot's low-level controllers in Isaac Sim or Gazebo.

The Idea of a Skills Library:

The skills library is a collection of parameterized, pre-defined robotic behaviors. These are the building blocks that the VLA model orchestrates to achieve higher-level goals. Each skill encapsulates the logic for a specific robot capability.

  • go_to(location): Navigates the robot to a specified location (e.g., coordinates, object name, room name).
  • look_at(target): Orients the robot's head or gaze to focus on a target (e.g., object, point in space).
  • grasp(object): Executes a grasping primitive to pick up a specific object. This involves planning the approach, closing the gripper, and lifting.
  • place(object, location): Places a held object at a specified location. This requires inverse kinematics for placement and opening the gripper.

6. ROS 2 Nodes and Interfaces for the Capstone

The capstone project relies on a distributed system of ROS 2 nodes, each responsible for a specific function, communicating through well-defined interfaces (topics, services, and actions). This modularity allows for easier development, testing, and debugging.

  • humanoid_state_estimator:

    • Responsibility: Fuses data from various sensors (IMU, joint encoders, odometry, visual odometry) to provide a robust and accurate estimate of the robot's current pose (position and orientation) and joint states. Manages the TF tree.

  • humanoid_planner_node:

7. Step-by-Step Capstone Implementation Plan

Implementing the capstone project is best approached in phases, starting with foundational components and progressively adding complexity. Each phase has clear goals, implementation steps, and success criteria.

Phase 1: Basic Simulation & URDF Working

Goal: Get the humanoid robot spawned in the simulator with its joints correctly configured and controllable.

    • Finalize humanoid_description package: Ensure the URDF accurately defines all links and joints. Add dummy controllers to the URDF for ros2_control setup.
    • Create sim_launch.py in humanoid_bringup: Launch Gazebo (or Isaac Sim) and spawn the humanoid robot. Include robot_state_publisher to publish TF transforms from the URDF.

    • Integrate a navigation stack (e.g., Nav2 for wheeled bases, or a custom locomotion planner for bipedal walking) that takes /humanoid/navigation_goal and outputs joint commands.

    • This node will use inverse kinematics (IK) solvers (e.g., MoveIt 2 integration, or a custom IK library) to generate joint trajectories for grasping and placing.
